Driver’s License for Undocumented Aliens

YOU CAN APPLY FOR CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE REGARDLESS OF IMMIGRATION STATUS BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 2015

Starting January 1, 2015, the California’s Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV), will start issuing driver’s license to California residents, regardless of immigration status.  In other words, even if an applicant does not have legal immigration status (overstaying or undocumented alien) provided it can be established that said applicant is a California resident, an original driver’s license can be issued.

In order to be eligible for a California driver’s license, the applicant must submit satisfactory proof of identity (e.g., copy of passport) and proof of California residency (e.g., bank statement, utility bill, etc.).  Of course, the applicant must pass the written examination and the actual driving test.

Those who could not show proof of identity must undergo a secondary review which could entail of being interviewed by a DMV investigator in an attempt to verify the identity of the applicant.

If you want to apply for a California driver’s license this coming year, start gathering your documents and get a copy of the DMV handbook and start studying for the written test.
